How to Replace an audi keys replacement cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are various pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. But i am afraid I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They're cheap and easy to find, especially if they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this component is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for many problems in your vehicle. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points. This part is common across the audi new key 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find them in wrecking yards.
