How to Replace an audi key blade G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in the gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good thing is that they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly in the case of an Bosch unit which is what we have. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of many problems in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of your audi car key's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car key cover audi's crankshaft is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate fuel, timig, and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This part is common across the replacement Audi a3 Key 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find them in wrecking yards.
