Pragmatism aims to provide an alternative to the analytic and continental philosophical traditions. Their influence grew to numerous influential American thinkers, including John Dewey (1860-1952), who applied their theories to education and social improvement in various dimensions. Jane Addams (1860-1935) was the social worker who founded the field also gained from this influence.

More recently a new generation of philosophers have given pragmatism a wider platform for discussion. While they are different from traditional pragmatists, a lot of the neo-pragmatists claim to be part of the same tradition. Their main persona is Robert Brandom, whose work focuses on semantics and the philosophy of language however, he also draws inspiration from the philosophy of Peirce and James.

One of the primary distinctions between the classical pragmatics and the neo-pragmatists lies in their understanding of what it takes for an idea to be true. Neo-pragmatists insist on the notion of 'ideal warranted assertibility which states that an idea is genuinely true if a claim made about it can be justified in a specific manner to a specific group of people.

This viewpoint is not without its flaws. It is often criticized for being used to support unfounded and absurd ideas.
